It’s 2013 in Metropolis, Lex Luthor is making a play for the Oval Office, Clark Kent wears glasses and Lois Lane looks up to the sky to see Superman save the day. Releasing my inner geek, the first two minutes of Smallville’s season finale had me bouncing in my seat. This, of course, is merely a glimpse of the future. Waking up in his loft, Clark finds a gift left to him. If the futuristic dream weren’t enough, what comes next had me leaping from my seat. In the reflection of Clark’s eyes, we see the famous red and yellow shield with a surrounding blue glow. The slight editing flaw of the ‘S’ – it should have been backwards – is easily forgiven in the excitement that stirred in my veins.
The opening credits start and my heart is racing. I have to calm down so I don’t pass out. The scene opens on present-day Lois in Clark’s crow’s nest above the city where Zod reveals himself to be her beloved Blur. Zod insists to Lois’ disbelief that Clark is out to destroy the Blur. But Lois keeps her faith in Clark, there’s no way he would do that. She knows he’s keeping a secret so maybe now would be a good time to put her investigative skills to use – let us just hope she doesn’t come to any wrong conclusions…
Clark has his own dilemma to solve. Martha had left him with the Book of Rao, which will open a portal to transport the Kandorians to a parallel universe where they can live peacefully – the only catch is Clark has to leave with them. We all know Clark’s destiny is on Earth but after confronting an uncompromising Zod and finding a scorched Tess Mercer in the Fortress of Solitude, he takes the Justice Society and everyone else by surprise when he decides it’s best to use the Book of Rao.
Meanwhile, Lois is trying to put the pieces together and make a very important decision. Perry White has asked that she work with him in Africa. Snooping through Clark’s trunk in the loft, Lois comes across Dr. Swann’s journal full of Kryptonian writing – leading her to the wrong conclusion. Can’t say I didn’t see that coming. Clark interrupts her thoughts and confesses, not his love but his need for her. The moment is lost when Lois tells him of Perry’s offer. As painful as it is for him, Clark insists she take the job – making it easier for him to say goodbye.
The season finale cliffhangers start when Oliver Queen is attacked by an unknown source while trying to set up a new satellite. We can only assume this unknown source is the villain to come next season. The scene cuts to Zod’s meeting with Lois who quickly realizes, by a touch of his hand, that Zod is not her Blur. I knew that hand touch in ‘Charade’ would come to play. Zod deals her a deathly blow and with super cool effects, Clark shows up out of nowhere and saves the love of his life. Coming to, Lois finally sees her Blur in the shadows and she gets more than she bargained for when he pulls her in for one last kiss before he has to leave with the other Kandorians. It’s nice to see Lois got her kiss-recognition skill back as she steps out and sighs Clark’s name with a sense of relief.
With ten minutes left in the episode, Clark confronts the Kryptonians and through a slip of tongue, Zod reveals his betrayal – convincing his followers to shift their allegiance to Kal-El. The Book of Rao in set into play at the console Tess had put in Clark’s crows nest. One by one the Kandorians are sucked up into the glowing sky and just as Clark’s about to go, Zod pulls out a dagger made of Blue Kryptonite – humanizing both himself and Clark. Now there have been a lot fights on Smallville but this one is definitely in my top 5 of the series. Shot beautifully in the rain, the two enemies duke it out old school, nothing but fists. Getting the upper hand in the fight, Zod leads Clark towards the ledge, threatening to stab him with the Blue Kryptonite. Making a very Superman decision, Clark sacrifices himself to save the world, pulling the dagger into him and watching Zod be sucked into the sky as he falls to his impending doom.
